Our mission is to provide an environment for socialization, education, health services, recreation, creative expression, resources and referrals to older adults in Winona County. Support Programs:
A committee formed of Law Enforcement, Senior Center, Senior Advocacy, Community Health and older adults to address safety issues. This is a free program that provides home safety inspection and "Files of Life", an emergency information response card to older adults. TRIAD annually sponsors a Senior Safety Camp held in May.
Parkinson's Support Group meets the 1st Thursday of each month. This support group is sponsored and facilitated by Senior Advocacy. Members include Parkinson’s patients and family members.
A program in collaboration with Merchant's National Bank. The program is to assist in monthly money management. Personnel from Merchant's Bank are available at the Senior Center the 2nd Thursday of each month from 10 AM to 11:30AM.
Health Service Programs:
Can be taken daily by Active Wellness Center monitors from Winona State University. Also the third Wednesday of each month by Community Health Services nurses.
Community Health Service nursing staff conduct this annual clinic, usually in October or November.
Educational Programs:
This is an informational session and members are invited to talk or ask questions on any topics of interest. Invited guests are available to answer questions or discuss topics of interest. The first Friday of the month a police officer for the local law enforcement agency is our guest. The third Friday Mayor Jerry Miller discusses local issues.
Two types of classes are held. The first class is an 8-hour course designed for the person who has not taken this course previously. After three years the class is to be taken again and we offer the 4-hour refresher course for those who have taken the 8-hour class. A 10% reduction on your car insurance is given after completion of this course. You must be 55 years old or older to take this class. AARP Driver Safety Program Schedule
Students are available to give computer lessons at the Center's computer lab. The computers have access to the Internet, games and Microsoft Office applications.
Recreational Programs:
Two regulation size tables and one snooker table are available for members to shoot pool. The pool hall is open 8 AM –4 PM, Monday through Friday.
Recreational bus trips are organized every month and registration begins at 8.00am on the designated registration day. Registration is by phone-in only, and payments must be made within 5 business days after registration for a trip.
Meets one time monthly at an area restaurant. TBA each month in the Potpourri.
Physical Programs:
People with Arthritis Can Exercise is a free exercise program designed specifically for people with arthritis, but any member is welcome. The sessions run two times a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 10.30am.
The Active Wellness Center is open from 8.00am to 4.00pm Monday through Friday, with health and assessments done periodically. Areas of assessment include muscular strength and endurance, balance, cardiovascular endurance, blood pressure and body composition. Membership fees are $30.00 a year for Winona residents and $40.00 for nonresidents and are to be paid at the Park Rec. office in the basement of City Hall.
T'ai Chi is an ancient Chinese exercise used to harmonize the mind, body and soul. It may improve the immune system, stimulate creativity, improve flexibility, circulation, breathing and provide relief for asthma and arthritis.
Senior Bowling League is held every Tuesday at 1.00pm at the Westgate Bowling Alley. The cost is $4.00 for three games.
Water exercise is held three times a week at Winona State University pool. The time is 7:00 – 8:00 AM Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The cost is $23.00 for a 12 week session.
Creative Expression Programs:
This group meets the second and fourth Monday of the month. Stories are written individually and the read to the group who then gives feedback on the stories.
Watercolor classes are held throughout the year. Beginners for the beginning, never had instruction students. Advanced for the members who have completed the beginners course. The cost is $20 and includes supplies for the class. The session goes for 8 consecutive weeks.
This is the Senior Center’s choir. They meet every Tuesday from 12:30 – 2:00 PM. Selections are based on familiar music and in 2-part harmonies. The Golden Melodians perform for the community upon invitation. Many performances are scheduled throughout the Christmas season at nursing homes, assisted living homes and banks.
