Protecting Yourself and Recovering Stolen Property

If you have been the victim of a theft, car prowl, burglary, or robbery, call 454-6100 and make a report of the theft to a police officer. It is helpful to know the make and model numbers of the items that are missing. You can create your own records to keep at home by writing down your model/serial numbers. The serial number and model number is located on the bottom of most items. The most commonly stolen items are CD's, electronic entertainment items and appliances, guns, tools and jewelry. But you should have a list of all your property.

If you have valuable jewelry or tools, you should take good, close-up pictures of each piece. In fact, pictures of all your valuable property can be very useful if it is ever stolen. A detailed list of all your CD's can also be very helpful in solving the crime.
Consider having your jewelry inscribed with something unique. In addition to possibly adding some sentimental value to your jewelry, it makes it easily and positively identifiable as yours.

A good deal of stolen property ends up in local pawn shops and second-hand CD shops. Some of it, however, is shipped out of town or just discarded. Generally, the local pawn and CD shops cooperate with the police. If something has been stolen from you, you might want to check the shops for your missing items. But first, report it stolen, with a detailed description.

If you do find some of your stolen property in a pawn shop, or any other store, or if you believe that the Police Department has recovered some of your stolen property, please call the Police Department at 457-6302 or the Evidence Technician at 457-6290. You will need to call for an appointment
